ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the idea of white girl culture through the objects that define it. There is a very specific culture around green juices and SoulCycle that approaches health and wellness with real reverence. Green juices aren’t mere drinks…they’re a message to the world that the drinker is “cleansing” herself inside and out. They’re also a message that she can afford to spend ten dollars on a single juice.

“Clean Living” has become a sort of religion, one whose practicioners are mostly yuppies, white girls, trendy young moms. My art sees it all as bit absurd (a view often revealed in the titles), but lends it some gravity with a classical treatment. After all, if you’re looking for a religion, you could do much worse: taking care of yourself really does make your life better, and no blood has been spilled over kale juice.
